AUSTIN (KXAN) — After seeking public input, sending out a statewide survey and participating in a comprehensive accessibility evaluation, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has created an initiative to increase the accessibility of the outdoors for all Texans.
TPWD worked with an engineering consulting group called WT Group to develop the accessibility evaluation, resulting in a new plan being created, according to a news release from the agency.
The Americans with Disabilities Act Transition Plan will expand outdoor access for Texans with disabilities through updates to infrastructure, facilities, services and programs.
“Through collaboration and engagement with our community, we have crafted a phased plan for updates that will undoubtedly require substantial effort, resources and time,” said TPWD Executive Director David Yoskowitz, Ph.D. in the release. “However, we believe that the long-term benefits will far outweigh the challenges and are committed to making TPWD more accessible.”
According to the release, the department is committed to these new changes so that “all Texans, regardless of ability, can enjoy nature and outdoor activities.”
