A Texas rancher was killed by an explosive on his ranch in Mexico, according to a KRGV report.

Antonio Céspedes Saldierna, 74, of Brownsville, died on Jan. 31 after driving over and setting off an explosive device in Tamaulipas, KRGV reported.

KRGV spoke with Ramiro Céspedes — the son of Antonio Céspedes Saldierna — who said his father was driving on his ranch in the Santa Rita area of San Fernando, Tamaulipas when he set off the explosive device.

San Fernando, Tamaulipas, is about 80 miles south of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Horacio Lopez Peña and his wife, Ninfa Griselda Ortega, were also in the truck with Antonio when the explosive device was triggered, KRGV reported.

Tamaulipas state police confirmed to KRGV that Lopez died in the explosion. Ortega was hospitalized, but her condition was not immediately known.

The Tamaulipas government recently warned people of explosive devices on rural roads near the border between Reynosa and Rio Bravo, heading south to the limits of San Fernando and Valle Hermoso, KRGV reported.

A Tamaulipas state police spokesperson told KRGV that improvised explosive devices are placed by organized crime to keep opposing factions off their territory.

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller also warned people in a news release on Tuesday to be vigilant when traveling through the U.S.-Mexico border.

“Our agriculture family is the backbone of Texas, and we must do everything we can to protect it,” Miller said.
