Texas State offers free 24/7 counseling for students

SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — Texas State University students are now able to access more mental health support, with university officials crediting a new partnership with the virtual health provider TimelyCare.

The collaboration allows Texas State students to access these services 24/7 at no additional cost to them via the TimelyCare App or by visiting TXST TimelyCare.

“The fact that we can provide these virtual services 24/7 from anywhere in the United States, at no cost to the student, I think is just a tremendous service to be able to provide,” said Director of Texas State University’s Student Health Center Dr. Emilio Carranco.

The university said students will have access to the following:

On-demand mental health and emotional support (TalkNow)

Mental health counseling sessions

Psychiatry services

Health coaching

Care navigation

Basic Needs assistance

Peer support community

Digital self-care content

TXST said while many campus counseling centers often have a two-to-three-week wait time, students using can now connect with a provider in less than five minutes.

“It provides not only the immediate benefit, but I think long-term helps our students to be more successful,” Dr. Carranco said.

‘Everyone needs a little check-in’

Incoming TXST freshmen Yacqueline Saenz and Brandy Contreras said they’re anticipating college life to have its ups and downs.

“I always hear about how students are always overwhelmed and like they get stressed out,” Contreras said. “It’s a lot of pressure, honestly.”

But they said this gives them peace of mind knowing they have this tool in their hands.

“Everyone needs a little check-in,” Saenz said.

Carranco said mental health problems happen at all times of the day and night. This allows the university to meet those needs.

“This is really important because our students now have a way to access those services outside of normal business hours,” he said. “They can access those services in the evenings and on weekends when they may need them.”

According to the university, TimelyCare is offered at more than 250 colleges and universities across the country.

How to sign up

Carranco said a student needs to download the TimelyCare app and use their Texas State Net ID to access the services.

“It is already available to our students,” he said. “I am aware that our students are already accessing the service. It’s very easy to access.”
