FRISCO, Texas — Something is always happening in Frisco.
Wednesday at the Ford Center at the Star in Frisco, the turf field is covered with hardwood courts.
For the first time ever, the Dallas Open is moving from SMU to Frisco, bringing world-class tennis to one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.
The tournament is set to run February 1-9 and the city expects the tournament to welcome thousands of fans. Organizers say Frisco was the perfect fit.
“We’ve added 2,000 seats on the floor, plus the 4,000 permanent seats already here,” said Dallas Open Tournament Director Peter Lebedevs.
That extra space was needed as the event was upgraded to the highest level on the ATP Tour.
“We applied for an upgrade, which has never been heard of, and we had the opportunity to do that,” Lebedevs said.
And with Collin County booming, it made sense to move.
“Each time we came out here, more cranes were seen building, so that solidified the decision,” he added. “This is a growing area, a growing market—this is where we needed to be.”
Frisco Mayor Jeff Cheney says the event is another high-profile addition to the city’s sports scene.
“We have 7.5 million visitors come to Frisco every single year, and events like these keep our economy moving,” Cheney said.
The tournament is expected to generate $1.5 to $2 million in revenue.
“It’s been interesting to see the creative use of this venue, but it shows how versatile it is,” Cheney added.
Crews are working around the clock to complete the setup before opening day.
“When it all comes together, it’s really gratifying,” Lebedevs said.
As Frisco continues to make its mark in the sports world, the Dallas Open’s move is yet another sign that this city is ready to take center stage.
