The ‘Landman’ scene raising eyebrows (and some backlash) on social media

A conversation between Billy Bob Thornton’s character and his daughter is drawing attention – and some backlash – on social media.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Taylor Sheridan’s latest Paramount series, “Landman,” made its debut this past weekend.

Set in the rough and tumble world of the Texas oil business — from the Permian Basin in West Texas to the corporate offices in Fort Worth — the show and its main character, played by Billy Bob Thornton, don’t shy away from crass, tell-it-like-it-is dialogue.

An example: Thornton’s character, a landman in charge of managing the chaos of an oilfield business, responds to one of his company’s planes that had crashed into an oil tanker (yes, it was a jam-packed first show).

“Where’s the pilot?” Thornton asks the sheriff.

“Cooking in the cockpit,” the sheriff says.

That being said, one scene in particular is drawing quite the reaction on social media. Thornton’s character is watching an Odessa Permian football game with his teen daughter, played by 27-year-old Michelle Randolph, when the subject of her dating life is brought up.

And well, that’s about as far as we can take it here.

The ensuing conversation, which takes place about a half-hour into the show’s existence, drew plenty of raised eyebrows (including from Thornton’s character).

Here’s a clip posted to X that set the reactions ablaze:

Yeah, so, we hope he enjoyed that Dr Pepper.

Anyway, most of the reactions centered on the crude exchange but also on overall quality of the shows in the Sheridan/”Yellowstone” universe, as Sheridan is now behind 10 shows either airing or expected to air on Paramount+.

To be fair, the initial reviews for “Landman” have been pretty solid — as of Tuesday, the show is rated an 8.2 out of 10 on IMBD and a 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. And crude or not, Thornton’s seems to be perfect for the leading role.
