Three Irving ISD schools remain closed Wednesday, district says

Power has not been restored to three Irving ISD campuses, the district said.

IRVING, Texas — One day after an EF1 tornado touched down in Irving, thousands of residents and businesses are still waiting to have their power restored.

Three Irving ISD schools are still without power Wednesday morning, causing officials to cancel school for the day.

Hanes Elementary School, de Zavala Middle School and Cardwell Career Preparatory Center will be closed March 5, the district said. All other Irving ISD schools will operate as normal.

Irving ISD previously canceled classes at de Zavala Middle School Tuesday after downed power lines and a gas leak made the area around the school unsafe, the district said. Nearby, more than 350 residents were displaced after the storm partially destroyed two apartment complexes.

Residents were shuttled to Georgia Farrow Recreation Center at 530 Davis Drive, where a temporary shelter for those displaced by the storm was set up.

The district expects to resume school at all Irving ISD campuses tomorrow, the district said.
