Here are some tips to get ready from the City of San Antonio website:
UNSHELTERED POPULATION
The City of San Antonio’s Department of Human Services is working with community partners to open additional temporary overnight shelter space for those who don’t have a place to stay warm.
The following partners are offering temporary overnight shelter:
-
Corazon San Antonio at Grace Lutheran Church
-
Communities Under the Bridge (CUB)
-
SAMMinistries Shelter (Holiday Inn)
-
Haven for Hope partnership with Endeavors.
DHS Street Outreach will operate 24/7 from Monday, Jan. 6 through Friday, Jan. 10.
The City’s Community Connections Hotline (210-207-1799) will operate 24 hours a day through Friday to provide up-to-date shelter information and connect unsheltered individuals with resources, including shelter transportation and cold weather supplies.
FURNACE
-
Check your furnace is in working order. If you have a gas model, make sure there are no leaks.
-
Replace the air filter.
-
Put a carbon monoxide detector in your furnace closet to ensure it’s running safely.
-
Get a professional to fix any issues.
SPACE HEATERS
-
Use a model with fall protection, which will automatically shut it off if it tips over.
-
Plug the heater’s cord directly into the wall, not a surge protector.
-
Keep the heater at least 3 feet away from anything flammable, such as blankets, curtains, or bedding.
-
Don’t put it under your desk.
-
When you leave the room, turn the heater off and unplug it.
-
Do not leave the heater on or plugged in while you’re sleeping.
PIPES
-
This week is unlikely to result in a hard freeze, but you may want to protect your pipes and spigots anyway.
-
Wrap exterior pipes or anywhere else that air temperature might drop to freezing.
-
Use protective covers on outdoor spigots, or let the water run.
-
Some older homes may not be well insulated, so you can also choose to let inside sinks run if they’re along one of the outside walls.
PETS
-
Bring pets inside to keep them warm. If that’s not possible, provide them with shelter from the wind.
State law says dogs cannot be tethered with any size chain at any time. It also states dogs cannot be left outdoors restrained and unattended in the case of officially defined extreme weather or situations in which an animal is in severe distress, including conditions in which the actual or effective outdoor temperature is below 32 degrees Farenheit.
Violators could face impoundment of their pet. Violators could also receive a $2,00 fine and 180 days in jail for repeat offenders.
To report an animal left in the cold, call 311.
PLANTS
-
Bring in potted plants.
-
Cover plants
