Trash services delayed in Dallas due to winter weather

The Department of Sanitation is implementing strict safety rules for its outdoor workers, which include frequent warm-up breaks.

DALLAS — The dangerous frigid temperatures this week are delaying trash pickup in the City of Dallas.

The Department of Sanitation said that Thursday morning temperatures are expected to be in the low teens with wind chills forecasted to be below zero, they’re implementing strict safety rules for its outdoor workers, which include frequent warm-up breaks.

Officials said garbage trucks equipped with mechanical arms are expected to proceed on schedule only if road conditions are safe.

Manual collection routes that require workers to physically roll and empty trash bins will be delayed until “supervisors determine conditions are safe for outdoor work” the department said. Routes that usually begin at 7 a.m. will be pushed back to a 9 a.m. start time.

“Garbage collection will be prioritized over recycling collection,” the department said.

If pickups aren’t completed by Friday, crews will work on Saturday to try to complete the impacted routes or the trash will be collected during next week’s schedule.

The Department of Sanitation will provide more updates as road conditions are assessed, officials said.
