TEXAS — President-elect Donald Trump took to Truth Social to call on Texans to consider a primary challenge to Rep. Chip Roy.
Trump wrote in the post, “I hope some talented challengers are getting ready in the Great State of Texas to go after Chip in the Primary. He won’t have a chance!”
In a separate post, Trump said, “Weak and ineffective people like Chip have to be dismissed as being utterly unknowledgeable as to the ways of politics, and as to Making America Great Again.”
Roy’s opposition to raising the debt ceiling clashed with Trump’s request for Congress to extend borrowing limits or abolish the debt ceiling.
The Texas congressman refused to raise or suspend the debt ceiling unless significant spending cuts were included.
A Republican negotiator involved in discussions on a new government funding bill reports that Republicans are proceeding with a new accord and will vote Thursday evening.
Chip Roy is the U.S. representative for the 21st district in Texas who formerly served as chief of staff to Sen. Ted Cruz. Roy also serves as a member of the Rules Committee, which gatekeeps which measures hit the House floor.
