Why did you join the TYLA board? I joined the TYLA board to better serve the local affiliates and young lawyers in West Texas and small cities. As a San Angelo native, I know that young lawyers are often scattered across a large portion of the state and have a much more difficult time connecting and meeting mentorship needs. By representing District 15, I have been able to represent young lawyers and give them a voice and seat at a much larger table.
What advice would you give to other TYLA members who are looking for ways to grow professionally? Dive in! Is it scary? Absolutely—but it’s worth it! Getting involved in TYLA, the service arm of the State Bar of Texas, has been the most rewarding work of my career. I have met some of the most incredible young lawyers and best friends. Also, try new things! Volunteer at your local bar or legal aid—you may learn a new skill and you will definitely walk away a better lawyer.
Before joining the TYLA board, what is your favorite experience with community or public service? I got involved in Meals for the Elderly San Angelo and the Junior League of San Angelo. I am a former prosecutor, and my heart is for those who cannot protect themselves. Being involved in these two organizations helped me better connect to my community and identify the current needs of my hometown.
What was your favorite movie, TV show, musical artist, or song from high school/college? “What? Like it’s hard?” —Elle Woods in Legally Blonde. I also love “The Office.”
