A man was arrested after he allegedly fired several shots into his family home, believing he was under attack, police said.
FERRIS, Texas — A man was arrested after he allegedly fired 30 rounds at his family’s home during a psychotic episode, Ferris police said in a press release.
Officers responded around 2:40 a.m. Sunday to a home in the 800 block of East 8th Street to a 911 call placed by a man who claimed people were trying to kill him and had already killed his family, the Ferris Police Department said in a press release.
When police arrived they found that the man who placed the call, 47-year-old Homero Salinas, fired about 30 rounds under the influence of alcohol and cocaine. Several shots were fired into his family’s home, the release states. Investigators found that Salinas was experiencing hallucinations and falsely believed his family had been killed, police said.
After the shooting, Salinas left the property and was later taken into custody without incident by the Ferris Department of Public Safety, Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, and Wilmer Police Department, the release states. Law enforcement later found Salinas is a citizen of Mexico and does not possess a lawful immigration status in the U.S., police said.
Salinas’ family members were found hiding on the floor of their home, unaware it was their family member allegedly firing shots in their direction, the release states. No one was injured during the incident, police said.
Officials also found that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement previously placed a detainer on Salinas in 2013, police said. A detainer is a request from ICE that asks a federal, state or local law enforcement agency to notify the agency before releasing a suspect and to hold them for 48 hours beyond the time they would ordinarily release them, according to the agency.
“This should be a wake-up call,” Brooks Williams, Ferris City Manager, said. All the officers and deputies acted with courage and clarity, preventing what could have easily become a tragedy involving innocent lives. We are committed to seeking full accountability and ensuring the safety of our residents.”
