UT Health San Antonio doctor joins national long COVID committee

  

A local doctor has been appointed to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Advisory Committee on long COVID.

Doctor Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez is a professor and chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

According to a release, Verduzco-Gutierrez is a nationally recognized leader in the care of people suffering from long COVID.

In San Antonio, she directs the multidisciplinary long COVID clinic, which provides comprehensive patient-centered care for those with persistent post-COVID symptoms.

Verduzco-Gutierrez will be the only representative from Texas on the 14-member committee.

“This is an opportunity for public-facing persons to provide collective advice to the secretary of health for long COVID,” Verduzco-Gutierrez said. “It will be great to offer my perspective as a physician researcher who has been caring for persons with long COVID and other infection-associated chronic conditions.”

Verduzco-Gutierrezhas contributed to various healthcare projects in the past, including the National Institutes of Health RECOVER study and more than 100 publications dedicated to improving education, research and access to care for those affected by long COVID.

In 2024, she also served on the committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to help create a universal working definition of long COVID.
