AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas Longhorns head women’s basketball coach Vic Schaefer is getting a raise and a contract extension.
According to contract details for approval by the UT System Board of Regents in its February 19-20 meeting, Schaefer is getting a three-year extension and a 4.3% raise starting in the 2027-28 season.
Schaefer’s current annual salary of $2.3 million will continue through the 2026-27 season, then go up $100,000 each year of the extension, maxing out at $2.6 million by 2030. Performance incentives will remain the same including a $250,000 bonus if the Longhorns with the national championship and a $50,000 bonus if they win the conference regular season or tournament title. He’ll also get $50,000 if he’s named the national coach of the year.
He received a $261,2590 “special payment” in 2022. He’s in his fifth year coaching the Longhorns.

Schaefer is 135-34 as the Texas head coach and last year’s team had 33 wins, the most since the 1985-86 national championship season when Jody Conradt’s squad went a perfect 34-0. This year, the Longhorns are 26-2 overall and 12-1 in the Southeastern Conference. Schaefer has led the Longhorns to three Elite Eight appearances. He took Mississippi State to two Final Fours in 2016-17 and 2017-18.
No. 2 Texas is coming off a 65-58 win over No. 7 Louisiana State, which led to a rise in the Associated Press Top 25 rankings from No. 3. They have the week off from play, returning to the court Feb. 24 on the road against Georgia.
