SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police Department is commending two citizens who helped a struggling officer who was shocked with a Taser during the arrest of a wanted suspect, according to a Facebook post.
According to a police report obtained by KSAT 12 News, the incident happened on Nov. 9, 2024, in the 6000 block of Tezel Road.
The report states an officer stopped Sammy Bonner, 43, for crossing without a crosswalk. The officer then discovered that Bonner had an active warrant and he requested backup, the report states.
At some point, while the responding officer waited for backup, he saw Bonner “rummage” through his backpack, which posed a “possible danger to officer safety,” the report states.
The officer attempted to arrest Bonner for his active warrant, but he pulled away, police said.
Authorities said that’s when the officer attempted to arrest him again, but Bonner resisted and said “I’m not going back to jail.”
The situation escalated when Bonner reached for the officer’s handgun, the report states.
The officer deployed his Taser but it was ineffective.
Authorities said Bonner grabbed the Taser, and they both fell to the ground. Bonner eventually shocked the officer with the Taser during the struggle, the report said.
As this unfolded, nearby citizens who saw the struggle rushed to help the officer and ultimately arrest Bonner.
Bonner was arrested and charged with taking a weapon from a police officer, assaulting a police officer, and resisting arrest.
In SAPD’s Facebook post, officers said the citizen’s actions were “courageous and selfless.”
“Their intervention prevented the situation from potentially escalating and likely saves someone from serious injury,” SAPD said.
