Warming centers open in San Antonio, Bexar County

  

SAN ANTONIO – The City of San Antonio and Bexar County will have several overnight hubs available for people seeking shelter due to freezing temperatures.

The city will have six resilience hubs open overnight and several warming centers open through 6 p.m. Monday.

Bexar County will have five warming centers open through 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Light precipitation is forecast to arrive in the area by dinnertime Monday. Initially, it may not reach the ground, as the lower part of the atmosphere is very dry.

After sunset, light sprinkles could transition into light freezing rain or light sleet as temperatures gradually cool.

Resilience hub locations

The City of San Antonio will open six overnight resilience hubs starting at 6 a.m. Monday.

These hubs will provide basic needs and supplies, shelter, access to power and device charging and free Wi-Fi, according to a news release from the city.

  • Southside Lions Senior Center: 3303 Pecan Valley
  • Normoyle Senior Center: 700 Culberson
  • Northeast Senior Center: 4135 Thousand Oaks
  • Gilbert Garza Community Center: 1450 Mira Vista
  • Miller’s Pond Community Center: 6175 Old Pearsall
  • Copernicus Community Center: 5003 Lord Road

Anyone planning to stay overnight at one of the hubs should bring clothes and medicine. Kennels will be available for pets in a separate area.

County warming centers

Bexar County officials will have five warming centers open from 7 p.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The warming centers include:

  • Light House Christian Temple: 8201 Old Pearsall Road
  • VFW Post 7108: 8795 FM 1560
  • St. Padre Pio Catholic Church: 3843 Bulverde Parkway
  • Christ the King Lutheran Church: 1129 Pat Booker Road
  • Elmendorf Community Library: 203 Bexar Avenue

Residents seeking shelter are encouraged to bring essentials, including medications, clothes, and other personal supplies.

Service animals are permitted at all locations, the county said.

City warming centers

These locations will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday.

VIA will be offering passengers fare-free rides to or from any of these locations through VIA bus services or VIA Link. Riders need to let the bus driver know when they’re boarding that they are heading to these centers.

  • Maverick Branch Library: 8700 Mystic Park
  • Miller’s Pond Community Center: 6075 Old Pearsall Road
  • Mission Branch Library: 3134 Roosevelt Ave.
  • Schaefer Branch Library: 6322 US Hwy 87 E.
  • Semmes Branch Library: 15060 Judson Road
  • Ward Community Center: 435 E. Sunshine Drive

Additional temporary shelters

The City of San Antonio’s Department of Human Services is working with community partners to open additional temporary overnight shelters for those experiencing homelessness.

The hubs will open at 6 p.m. Monday. They are designed to be accessible and equitable facilities where people in need can access essential resources and information during the cold snap we will experience.

Those locations are:

  • City of San Antonio Bode Community Center: 901 Rigsby Ave.
  • Communities under the Bridge (CUB): 724 Chestnut St.
  • Corazon SA: 504 Ave E.
  • Haven for Hope: 1 Haven for Hope Way
  • Sold Out Believers Church: 1139 Gembler (anyone) & 1802 Guadalupe (women only)
