Opposition is in full swing to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ on-field ceremony honoring the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, an organization of “drag nuns” that the Catholic League calls an anti-Catholic hate group. Thousands of Catholics, other Christians, and even some people of the Jewish faith gathered in a parking lot near the Dodgers’ stadium on Friday afternoon to pray ahead of the game. Later, the religious groups marched to Dodger Stadium, shutting down one entryway on Vin Scully Avenue.
Weeks of momentous opposition led to the drag nuns being announced on-field to a mostly empty stadium, while receiving some boos from baseball fans in attendance.
Below are the events of the day, leading to the pre-game ceremony:
Religious groups gathered to pray ahead of LA Dodgers’ Pride Night hosting an anti-Catholic group.
Conservative Catholic pundit Jack Posobiec led the group in traditional Latin prayer.
A Jewish Rabbi spoke in solidarity with the religious group, saying, “If you are anti-Catholic, you’re anti-religion; you’re anti-God, I got a problem with that.”
CathoicVote, an organization that launched a million-dollar campaign calling to boycott the bigoted Dodgers’ event, launched billboard trucks in the area near the stadium.
CatholicVote also aired a commercial on the local news channel Fox-LA.
Media and police helicopters reportedly flew overhead, as the Catholic and other Christian groups were amassed.
Catholic organizers decided to make a stand where everyone could see them, so the group began marching toward the stadium,
The Dodger Stadium entrance on Vin Scully Avenue was shut down by the protestors.
A music video was dropped on Friday, featuring Gospel singer Jimmy Levy and conservative Christian hip-hop artist Bryson Gray. The song titled, “Reclaim the Rainbow,” is steadily climbing the iTunes charts, sitting around the number 20 spot at the time of writing.
Catholic pitcher for the Washington Nationals, Trevor Williams was featured in an interview that was released on Friday, speaking on his public condemnation of the anti-Catholic group and his personal faith.
In related news, Friday marks the MLB debut of pitcher Emmet Sheehan, who went to Fordham Prep, an all-boys Catholic School and bears the same Irish-Catholic surname as this author.
The protests and opposition are ongoing, and RedState will continue to monitor this story.
