EL PASO, Texas – Investigators said they have discovered an underground tunnel going from Ciudad Juarez into the West Texas city of El Paso.
The tunnel, which was found on Jan. 10, has sparked a multi-agency response ranging from Homeland Security and the FBI to the Mexican government.
According to El Paso television station KVIA , the tunnel is approximately four feet wide and six feet long.
The tunnel is supported by two-by-four wood beams. It also has an electricity and ventilation system, KVIA reported.
Retired U.S. Border Patrol Chief Victor Manjarrez described the tunnels as sophisticated.
“When we think of drilling equipment, we normally think of vertical, you know, up and down, horizontal, drilling equipment. That’s mining equipment,” Manjarrez said. “And that’s what’s been utilized the most complicated ones now.”
No arrests have been made in connection to the tunnel discovery.
Homeland Security officials said their investigation is ongoing.
