SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Independent School District trustees could give the final go-ahead needed for a new downtown minor league baseball stadium Monday evening.
The board is expected to vote on the broad strokes of a deal for a 2.3-acre parking lot on Camaron Street that sits in the proposed footprint of a $160 million baseball stadium for the San Antonio Missions. According to a presentation posted ahead of the meeting, the vote would be for a non-binding memorandum of understanding.
The property is the final piece necessary for the project, and the district has been going back and forth with Designated Bidders — the ownership group of the San Diego Padres’ AA affiliate — as well as downtown development group Weston Urban, the City of San Antonio, and Bexar County on what it will take to hand it over.
KSAT will livestream the meeting in the video player above starting at 5:30 p.m. If there is no stream, check back at a later time.
Trustees last met on Nov. 18 and unanimously agreed to a hefty set of terms to present to the team and its partners. Those terms included:
-
Funding for a $45 million building for the Advanced Learning Academy
-
Guarantee at least 1,250 affordable housing units built within the district
-
Construction of a new parking garage at the northern corner of the proposed stadium site
-
$400,000 per year to make up for not opening up the property to a competitive sale
-
Spots on the Houston Street Tax Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) Board
The board had previously given a Dec. 9 deadline for all parties to respond.
According to a presentation in the agenda materials, the latest version of the terms include:
-
The team will donate land to SAISD for a new ALA building and a new parking garage
-
San Antonio and Bexar County will adopt five-year housing goals including a focus on family-affordable housing in the “urban core,” including SAISD attendance zones
-
Bexar County will build a new parking garage on or near the Fox Tech campus
-
SAISD will no longer pay $432,000 in parking fees each year for the Quincy garage
-
SAISD getting a seat on the San Antonio Housing Trust, rather than the Houston Street TIRZ
