COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The future is bright at Kyle Field, that’s what A&M Athletics leadership said less than 24 hours before Mexico and Brazil kick off in Aggieland.
And the excitement on campus this summer doesn’t end there.
“Just being in the community for over 20 years. I think this has been something that’s been discussed the whole time. ‘Oh, what if we could do this there and what if they did a concert there, what would that be like’,” Texas A&M Assistant Athletics Director of Special Events, Kindra Fry said. That wait is finally over. “It’s actually happening. It’s real and we can do it and we’re you know, we’re putting a different face to not only Texas A&M Athletics but Texas A&M University and Bryan-College Station.”
It’s more than just one different face, but two international professional soccer teams, George Strait, Parker McCollum and Catie Offerman all within eight days.
“A lot of changes will happen in between the two we’re gonna have to remove some of the grass that we put down for soccer to be able to make room for the concerts,” Fry said.
This experience is giving leaders at Kyle Field something to learn from, build on and expand access to the stadium potentially year-round.
“We have plans to do more. I don’t know that we will do them back to back but we do have plans to work with some other groups and just see kind of what we can do and work with time here and time of year and what that looks like so there are still plans to come,” she said.
Jeremiah Cook, the Tourism Manager for Visit College Station, says this will not only kick off some impactful economic benefits for the community but will also continue putting Aggieland on the map.
“It’s hard to put a finger on exactly what’s different about College Station and it’s one of those things you just have to experience,” he said. “There’s that excitement mounting. We’ve talked about this for so long and I think that initially there was so much excitement around the George Strait concert and the soccer match and now they’re finally here we get to take a moment and celebrate.”
Fry said she looks forward to hearing feedback from the community following the events so they know how to best approach future events.
