As the sun began to set against the U.S. Capitol building on the evening of January 6, a Reuters photographer captured an image of the iconic structure that is likely to live in infamy. In it, a dense crowd of supporters of Donald Trump have thronged the Capitol steps, their bodies illuminated by the bright light from the explosion of police munition. Near the left side of the frame, amid a plume of white smoke, a distinct red, white, and blue flag rises from the melee.
