ARLINGTON, Texas — The magic of Oz has landed in North Texas, and for a limited time, fans of the blockbuster film ‘Wicked’ can get an up-close look at the costumes worn by its stars, including Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
The Arlington Museum of Art is hosting an exclusive exhibition featuring six original costumes from the highly lauded Wicked film, which hit theaters in November and has since been nominated for 10 Oscar awards.
The exhibit showcases some of the most iconic outfits from Wicked, designed by Paul Tazewell. The propped-up creations include Elphaba’s detailed Defying Gravity dress and Glinda’s voluminous Bubble Dress. Displayed on mannequins nearly identical in size to the actors who wore them, the exhibit offers visitors a rare glimpse into the intricate detail and craftsmanship behind the film’s wardrobe.
“We even have the same wheelchair used by Nessarose in the movie,” Kendal added. “It’s incredible to see the level of representation and artistry in these costumes.”
Glinda’s Bubble Dress, worn by Ariana Grande, is a showstopper.
“She’s such a tiny person, and this dress is beautifully voluminous,” Kendal explained. “It even features a Fibonacci spiral in its design.”
Meanwhile, Elphaba’s signature look carries deep meaning.
“Her whole aesthetic in the movie is black—she’s still mourning her mother, but she’s also a lover of nature,” Kendal shared. “This costume reflects mushrooms, the underside of mushrooms, and it’s all hand-pleated. It took an incredible amount of time to create.”
The Wicked costume exhibition is on display at the Arlington Museum of Art until April 27. Admission is free.
