DALLAS — If you’ve got someone special in your life, you can light up their world with flowers. Or you can just light up the flowers.
“It’s the first plant that I’ve seen that glows in the dark,” said Jennifer Hatalski, vice president of marketing for Calloway’s Nursery.
Hatalski said the plant is called Firefly. She’s been in the horticulture business her entire life but has never seen anything qu ite like it.
“The science behind it is really, really amazing,” Hatalski said.
She said it took a scientist in Idaho 10 years to develop. He took genes from a bioluminescent mushroom and crossed them with a petunia. The result was the Firefly petunia, the first bioluminescent flower to go to market.
Firefly needs six to eight hours of sunlight to stay healthy but need total darkness to glow.
“When my friends come over, I take them all to my closet,” Hatalski laughed.
Calloway’s has Firefly for sale at all of its locations, but Hatalski said that might not last long.
Every time Calloway’s restocks, Firefly is glowing, glowing, gone.
It may go even faster now because Calloway’s is offering $10 off of Firefly Petunia on March 26 only.
“It’s really fun to have at home and get to experiment with,” Hatalski said.
The world’s first glow-in-the-dark plant, guaranteed to make you light up, too.
