The YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas plans major changes at its T. Boone Pickens facility in downtown.

The agency plans to partner with Dallas County and nonprofit ChildCareGroup to establish a child care center at its roughly 211,000-square-foot property at 601 N. Akard St. The roughly 25,000-square-foot center could span two floors and ultimately accommodate about 300 children, ages 6 months to 6 years old.

It would be a significant change for a prime downtown property, one that the nonprofit nearly sold a few years ago. And it would help address a major challenge for the downtown workforce, with child care becoming a major challenge for many working parents.

Curt Hazelbaker, president and CEO of YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas, anticipates renovations to take about six months and cost between $3 million and $3.5 million. The organization has secured $2 million so far, including a $1 million contribution from Dallas County and a matching donation from YMCA.
