3 killed, 3 hospitalized after fire engulfs North Side home, SAFD says

A house on the North Side went up in flames overnight, claiming the lives of three people and hospitalizing three others, according to the San Antonio Fire Department.

SAFD responded to the fire just after 3 a.m. Saturday in the 16600 block of Winding Oak Drive.

San Antonio police had kicked in the door before SAFD’s arrival after hearing screaming from inside the house.

Upon arrival, firefighters immediately began providing rescue to the home covered in heavy smoke. They rescued a total of 6 people from the home, including three adults and three children.

They were all taken to the hospital, four of which were in critical condition.

Two adults and one child have since been pronounced dead, according to officials. Information on the other victims has not been released.

SAFD said the fire is believed to have started in the garage. However, no smoke detectors have been found throughout the home, and officials said there are no reports of any going off.

Firefighters are expected to canvas the neighborhood and check all homes have smoke detectors.

The cause of the fire is unknown, and the investigation continues.
