Aggie soccer kicks off home schedule against Denver

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 24 Texas A&M women’s soccer team opens the home portion of the 2024 campaign with Wednesday’s 7 p.m. match against the Denver Pioneers at Ellis Field.

The Aggies are riding high after last week’s 5-0 road domination of the Lamar Cardinals in the season opener. Sydney Becerra led the assault with five points on two goals and two assists. Grace Ivey added the first two goals of her career and freshman Kat Campbell added to the tally in her first career match.

After Maysen Veronda’s three saves in the season-opening clean sheet, the Maroon & White look to start the season with consecutive shutouts for the seventh time in program history.

The Aggies enter the contest with head coach G Guerrieri ranked second among active NCAA Division I coaches. He is three wins from moving past former Florida skipper Becky Burleigh for eighth place on the NCAA’s list for coaching wins among all divisions.

Denver is looking for its first win after a pair of narrow losses to star the year. The Pioneers yielded late goals in defeats against No. 8 North Carolina (2-1) and Idaho State (1-0). Denver was outshot by the Tar Heels, 19-4, but were more potent against the Bengals with an 18-7 shot advantage.

The Aggies and Pioneers are facing each other for the first time on the pitch. Texas A&M only has two prior meetings against current members of the Summit League. The Aggies topped Oral Roberts, 11-0, in their inaugural season in 1993. The Maroon & White played North Dakota State to a 1-1 draw in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament, advancing to the second round with a 4-3 edge in the penalty kick shootout.

The match is available on SEC Network+ with David Ellis (play-by-play) and Jeff Given (color) on the broadcast.

A radio call of the match is available with the voices of Nick Savage and Sean Burnett painting the picture. The match airs on Gospel 97.3 FM in the Brazos Valley with the audio also available in the 12th Man Mobile app.
