Biden Says He Will Stop Weapons Exports to Israel If It Attacks Rafah

Joe Biden used his interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett Wednesday to announce that the US would cease supplying Israel with offensive weaponry if it launches its anticipated attack on the Gaza city of Rafah.

Biden said that the US remains committed to Israel’s defense, just not to the extent of allowing it to eradicate terrorist strongholds that launched an attack on Israeli civilians. If Israel goes after the last remaining Hamas stronghold to eliminate the terrorist movement and free any hostages who happen to remain alive, Biden said, “we’re not going to supply the weapons and artillery shells used.”

Earlier today, it was confirmed that the US had halted shipments of arms to Israel.

The president withheld 1,800 2,000-pound bombs and 1,700 500-pound bombs that he feared could be dropped on Rafah, where more than one million Gazans have taken refuge, the officials said. The administration is reviewing whether to hold back future transfers, including guidance kits that convert so-called dumb bombs into precision-guided munitions.

The decision to delay the delivery of the 3,500 bombs was the first time since the Oct. 7 Hamas-led terrorist attack that Mr. Biden has used his power to curtail arms as an instrument to influence Israel’s approach to the war that followed. A number of Mr. Biden’s Democratic allies in Congress have for weeks urged him to limit or halt arms shipments to Israel , something he had refused to do until now because of his strong support for the effort to destroy Hamas.

Biden’s Non-Answer on Possibly Impeachable Act Is, Itself, an Answer

The extent to which this will make a difference is a matter of conjecture. What would be more worrying would be the White House invoking arms control laws to prevent Israel from using weapons it already has to continue the war.

There is no mystery why Biden is depriving a long-time US ally of the means to bring the war in Gaza to a successful conclusion. The deep-rooted anti-Semitism in the Democrat party has come to the fore since Israel launched its offensive against the Hamas fiefdom in Gaza. Not only are elite college campuses and the predictable jihadi constituencies up in arms, overall support for Israel among Democrats has cratered. In November, Israel’s actions in Gaza were approved by 36 percent of Democrats as opposed to 50 percent of Americans. Now, Democrat support has dropped by half to 18 percent.

In addition to a craven attempt to shore up his crumbling electoral support, Biden is showing our allies and enemies that America, under his failed leadership, is not a reliable ally. Just as he has withheld arms from Ukraine to prevent Russia from suffering a battlefield defeat, he’s now withholding weapons from Israel to save Hamas’s bacon. This is not unnoticed in Tehran, Beijing, Pyeongyang, and Moscow. It is also noticed in Brussels, London, and every other friendly capital on the globe.
