DETCOG offers housing assistance to families displaced by recent Southeast Texas flooding

Applications will be accepted until May 31st.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Deep East Texas Council of Governments is offering housing assistance to families who were displaced by recent Southeast Texas flooding in five counties that were included in recent disaster declarations issued by Governor Greg Abbott.

DETCOG Regional Housing Authority is accepting applications from affected residents in Newton, Shelby, Tyler, Hardin, and Jasper counties.

“We understand the urgency of the situation and are committed to providing swift assistance to those in need,” said Lonnie Hunt, Executive Director of DETCOG. “Because of the disaster declaration in these counties, we are able to expedite the issuance of housing vouchers to persons who were displaced by the flooding. If they qualify under the HUD income guidelines, we can issue them a voucher quickly.”

Applicants from Newton, Shelby, Tyler, Hardin, and Jasper counties that were displaced by the flooding will automatically go to the top of the wait list so they can be processed without delay, according to a release from DETCOG.

There’s currently a demand for the program and some applicants will be placed on a waitlist. It could take months from the time an applicant is added to the wait list until they can receive a voucher.

The application widow will close on May 31.
