Drivers stranded on I-35 near Gainesville due to poor road conditions

GAINESVILLE, Texas — Dozens of cars were left on a North Texas highway Thursday as poor road conditions made the highways and many surrounding roads impassable.

A WFAA viewer said she had been stuck in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 in Gainesville for more than three hours. Gainesville is located in Cook County just north of Denton.

A dispatcher told WFAA that the “stretch from Valley View to Gainesville is flooded and impassable.”

Heavy rain from Thursday’s storms prompted a Severe Thunderstorm Watch and tennis ball-sized hail for several areas of North Texas, including parts of Dallas, Tarrant, Cooke and Lamar counties.

There is also an ongoing TxDot project underway in the area.

WFAA has reached out to Gainesville police and the fire department to find out the cause and when traffic is expected to clear.
