Ex-boyfriend charged in murder of Denton woman, police say

The 44-year-old victim was found killed in a shed in January.

DENTON, Texas — Denton police have charged a man with the killing of his ex-girlfriend in January, officials said.

The suspect, 39-year-old Tommy Bays III of Denton, was charged with murder after his ex-girlfriend, 44-year-old Melonie Frye, was found killed in a shed in January.

Frye’s death was ruled a homicide in March, police say. Bays had been identified as a person of interest during the investigation due to their past relationship, and further analysis found Bays as the major contributor of DNA evidence found at the crime scene.

Police obtained an arrest warrant for Bays on Tuesday, and he was arrested without incident Wednesday evening in the 400 block of West Parkway Street.

Bays is in the Denton County Jail, police say, and bond has not been set at this time.

On Jan. 17, officers received a call for an “unconscious person” in the 900 block of Monterey Drive. When they arrived, they discovered the body of Frye.

The investigation is still ongoing, police say.
