On Thursday, February 16, Texas Governor Greg Abbott gave his State of the State speech. These are the key highlights of his speech and what he wants to do for Texas. Governor Abbott started off with the resources that Texas provides. He compared Texas with China – Texas is ranked the ninth largest economy globally. He used China as an example that we should not rely on the country for goods.

On Thursday, February 16, Texas Governor Greg Abbott gave his State of the State speech. These are the key highlights of his speech and what he wants to do for Texas.

Resources

Governor Abbott started off with the resources that Texas provides. He compared Texas with China – Texas is ranked the ninth largest economy globally. He used China as an example that we should not rely on the country for goods.

Highly skilled workforce

He then addressed the importance of community college after he visited Odessa College. Governor Abbott said students could graduate and work in-demand fields such as technology, healthcare, and energy.

Property taxes

Governor Abbott then mentioned Texas has a large budget surplus. He intends to help property owners by lowering taxes. He proposed using $15 billion to help lower taxes that will come up in an emergency session.

Infrastructure

Next Governor Abbott mentioned fixing the infrastructure. He said $100 billion will be used to fix and improve roads and the power grid.

End COVID restrictions

Following this, Governor Abbott said he will end COViD restrictions. He forbids any company, agency, or government to impose COVID restrictions including mask and COVID mandates.

School funding

The governor mentioned that school must be a priority. Abbott said he plans to provide more funding for teachers in public schools.

“In fact, we are number one for National Blue Ribbon Schools, and we have one of the best high school graduation rates in America.”

He added he wanted to give parents more access to the education their children receive. Governor Abbott also pointed out that he created the Education Savings Account for students with special needs.

Strengthen laws on crime

Governor Abbott addressed the need to improve the current laws and help increase safety for Texans. He added the need to get criminals off the street who possess guns illegally.

“I want a mandatory minimum sentence for criminals who illegally possess guns of 10 years behind bars.”

Securing the border

Governor Abbott next covered what the Texas National Guard and Department of Public Safety have done to reduce illegal aliens crossing the border and seizing fentanyl.
