Jury sentences a man to life in prison for shooting La Grange police officer

An Austin County jury on Tuesday sentenced a man to life in prison for shooting a La Grange police officer in 2018.

According to trial testimony, Shazizz Mateen a wanted sex offender shot at La Grande deputy Calvin Lehnmann while the officer tried to apprehend him. Lehmann attempted to stop Mateen to help officers on the scene who did not have body armor at the time but was shot. The shooting left Lehman permanently blind.

Mateen was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine.

“While this verdict can in no way heal the wounds of Deputy Lehmann or restore to him his sight and the life he was able to live previously, it is our sincerest hope that the closure of this case brings some sense of solace, relief, and peace to Deputy Lehmann and his family, our family,” said Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek.
