Last month was Austin’s coldest January in 17 years

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The month may have ended with temperatures well above average, but January 2024 was Austin’s coldest January in 17 years.

The average temperature at Camp Mabry last month, with all daily high and low temperatures taken into account, was 47.7°. That’s the coldest average temperature for any January since 47.5° in 2007.


Austin’s weather extremes: Hottest, coldest and wettest January records

A typical January has an average temperature of 52.2°. The coldest on record was in 1930, when the average was just 39.3°.

January 1923 was the warmest on record, with an average temperature of 59.9°.

Last month’s average temperature was dragged down by several freezes, including Jan. 15 when the high at Camp Mabry was only 24°.

The month was also Austin’s 5th-wettest January on record, with 6.07″ of rain in total.
