Leadership Gillespie County (LGC) continued its program with a March 1 session focused on state government. The 2023 class participated in its seventh session by traveling to Austin to visit the Texas Capitol and observe the 88th Texas Legislative Session.

Majesty Wine tours sponsored the outing by providing a bus for the class, and a breakfast was provided by Texas Regional Bank.

The LGC students first went to Pease Park Conservancy, an 87-acre public park in Austin that operates as a 501c3. Heath Riddles, executive director of the conservancy, and Richard Craig, the park founder, both presented to the class and offered suggestions for park development in Fredericksburg.

The class then traveled to the capitol building to observe the current legislative session.

Following a lunch at Capitol Grill sponsored by the Jordan Law Firm, the students gathered in a meeting room where they visited with Senator Pete Flores and Rep. Ellen Troxclair, District 19. Troxclair gave the class members a tour of her office and gave several members of the class autographed copies of her book.

To wrap up the session, the class did a self-guided tour of the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum.

Leadership Gillespie County is an initiative of the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce where 20 applicants are chosen to participate in a two-year program dedicated to learning about the institutions, structures and leadership of the community.
