Max Belyeu, Texas Longhorns outfielder, named Big 12 co-player of the week

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas outfielder Max Belyeu knocked the cover off the ball during the opening Big 12 series in Lubbock, and for that, he earned Big 12 co-player of the week honors.

Belyeu hit .500, 7 for 14, against the Red Raiders with three home runs and seven RBIs, pushing his batting average to .341 and a team-leading six homers. In a 9-7 Texas win to clinch the series victory, Belyeu was a one-man wrecking crew with a home run and two doubles to finish the day 4 for 5 with three RBIs.

After a slow start to the season, Belyeu has come on strong lately. In his last six games, he’s hitting .458 and he’s homered in three consecutive games. Of his 15 hits this season, 11 have been for extra bases. He leads the team with an on-base plus slugging of 1.359.

Belyeu shares the weekly honor with Oklahoma’s Easton Carmichael. Kansas’ Reese Dutton was named the pitcher of the week and co-newcomer of the week along with Kansas State’s Jacob Frost.

Texas third baseman Peyton Powell was named the player of the week for Feb. 26 and Lebarron Johnson Jr. was named the pitcher of the week for the same week.

No. 23 Texas (9-6, 2-1 Big 12) starts a 10-game homestand Tuesday against Incarnate Word. The first pitch is scheduled to be at 6:30 p.m.
