Mayor’s Message – Pleasanton

I hope everyone is having a great week. March 7, 2023, was Pleasanton Legislative Day at the State Capital. This was a day for delegates from the city to visit with state representatives and senators. Pleasanton was also recognized in the House by Representative Tracy King and in the Senate by Senator Pete Flores.

Legislative Day at the State Capital. This was a day for delegates from the city to visit with state representatives and senators. Pleasanton was also recognized in the House by Representative Tracy King and in the Senate by Senator Pete Flores. This was an opportunity for the city to discuss projects and needs. The event was very successful in keeping a good relationship with our representatives and state departments.

Overview

The City of Pleasanton is seeking legislative support from the Texas House of Representatives and Texas Senate to support expanded resources that will strengthen economic development, housing, infrastructure, public safety, quality of life and transportation. The City of Pleasanton opposes any legislative action that will limit local control of current policy or administrative actions as defined under current Texas Law and the Texas Government Code. Furthermore, the City of Pleasanton does not support any unfunded mandates that increase state regulation without reimbursement from the State of Texas. Housing The City of Pleasanton supports increased resources in the form of grants, loans and special finance options for affordable housing for individuals and families. The city also supports increased resources to local governments and nonprofit organizations that provide affordable housing programs.

Infrastructure

The City of Pleasanton supports expanded resources through grants and loans to support and strengthen the deployment of broadband, electrical grid, sewer, drinking water and waste management for municipalities.

Economic Development

The City of Pleasanton supports increased resources in the form of grants, loans, technical assistance and administrative resources that expand economic development that will strengthen job creation, workforce development, small business development, increased sales tax, greater capture of ad valorem and hotel occupancy tax that can be reinvested to support local economic development initiatives and programs.

Public Safety

The City of Pleasanton supports expanded financial resources through grants for local police departments and fire departments that will provide funding for personnel, retention of officers, equipment, vehicles and training. Moreover, the City of Pleasanton strongly supports that these funding mechanisms be delivered directly from the Office of the Governor, Public Safety Office, Criminal Justice Division and the Texas Department of Agriculture to the local police and fire departments.

Quality of Life

The City of Pleasanton supports expanded resources in the form of grants from the Texas Parks and Wildlife and Texas Music Office to construct, equip and renovate local parks, trails and special amenities that will encourage indoor and outdoor recreation activities and entertainment for local community events.

Transportation

The City of Pleasanton supports expanded resources in the form of grants, loans and pass through finance options that will support increased financial resources for environmental and engineering studies, airport improvement, maintenance projects, pedestrian safety, road and street expansion and more local involvement from other transportation planning, projects and related studies. Moreover, the City of Pleasanton supports a Tx- DOT transportation study that will identify shorter transportation route options between US Highway 35 and 37 to create a Highway 35/37 transportation corridor that connects the Laredo, Pleasanton, Port of Corpus Christi and the Port of Houston.
