SAN ANTONIO – Updated COVID-19 booster shots are expected to roll out soon, which is why the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District is no longer offering the original boosters to anyone 12 years old or older.
Metro Health made the announcement Thursday, saying the monovalent Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 booster shots are currently not available.
However, the updated version of the booster shots will be available soon at the health clinics once the updated vaccines make their official debut. The new boosters from Pfizer and Moderna target the newest omicron strains of the virus.
According to The Associated Press, these boosters “promise Americans a chance at their most up-to-date protection” as more cases arise across the US.
The boosters consist of half of the original COVID-19 vaccine and half with new protections against the BA.4 and BA.5 omicron versions of the virus, which make up the majority of new cases, the AP reports.
The new boosters have received approval from the Food and Drug Administration, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still need to decide its recommendations for how best to use and distribute them.
