Most popular 2023 baby names in Texas: Liam and Emma, but Luka and Aurora make gains

Chances are you know a few Emmas and Liams. Perhaps you’ve even bestowed the names upon your own children.

They were the most popular baby names in Texas in 2023, according to the U.S. Social Security Administration, which released state data Thursday. Texas veers only slightly from the national list. In 2023, the most popular names in the U.S. were Liam and Olivia, with Emma at No. 2.

Liam has ranked as the most popular name in Texas since 2018, when it unseated Noah for the top spot. Emma has ranked among the top-three most popular names since 2010.

Not all states followed the same trend. In Hawaii, the most popular girl names were Isla and Mia. In Alabama and Mississippi, parents of boys were most likely to choose William, John and James.

Other names have soared in popularity.

On the boys’ side, Luka jumped to the 68th-most popular name in Texas and 95th in the U.S. The name has risen in popularity alongside Luka Dončić’s meteoric rise in the NBA. Luka was the 404th-most popular name for babies born in the U.S. in 2017, according to annual data from the Social Security Administration.

In 2018, the year the Mavericks drafted Dončić, it was the 320th-most popular. In 2019, when he finished one of the best rookie seasons in NBA history, it was the 221st-most popular.

“If someone names their child after me — maybe they’re not all after me, you know — but I think some of them are, it feels special,” Doncic previously said. “I don’t know what to say. It just feels special.”

Mateo has been a popular baby name in Texas since at least 2017, when it grabbed the No. 4 spot. This year, it climbed to the No. 3 spot and also appeared for the first time on the top 10 list for the U.S., at No. 6.

On the girls’ side, Gianna was the 16th-most popular name last year in Texas, up from No. 98 in 2017. More parents also chose the name Aurora. In 2016, it was the 80th-most popular name in Texas. Last year, it climbed to the 28th.

Other names to make the list in Texas? For the boys, Santiago (No. 4), Axel (No. 47) and Maverick (No. 65), and for the girls, Luna (No. 12), Aria (No. 23) and Delilah (No. 41) appeared on the list.
