NEISD is getting $2.6 million to expand mental health services for students and families

The North East Independent School District is expanding mental health services for students and families.

A $2.6 million grant was approved by Bexar County Commissioners to increase access to mental health professionals, including hiring social workers and support staff and contracting with a local vendor to provide additional licensed mental health professionals.

The funding comes from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), which federal pandemic-recovery funds to bolster existing mental health programs and help start new ones, according to a press release from NEISD.

Students already have access to certified school counselors who offer one-on-one counseling and opportunities to work in small groups to address student needs.

The expansion of student health benefits includes a partnership with UT Health to offer students services like mental health evaluations and short-term counseling through Texas Child Health Access Through Telemedicine (TCHATT).

NEISD employees also have access to ComPsych, which offers 24-hour confidential emotional support, legal guidance and other resources.
