No. 2 Texas pounds Northwestern State, Tarleton State in Longhorn Invitational

  

AUSTIN (KXAN) — No. 2 Texas clobbered the softball Friday at McCombs Field, ringing up two mercy-rule victories as part of the Longhorn Invitational.

Texas pounded Northwestern State 10-2 in its first game of the day then followed it up with a 17-0 drubbing of Tarleton State. The Longhorns clubbed six home runs on the day, two coming from Alyssa Washington against Tarleton State.

Against the Texans, Katie Cimusz went 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles while Washington finished 3 for 4 with five RBIs. Leighann Goode smacked a 2-run homer and finished 3 for 4 with five RBIs and Reese Atwood hit two doubles and drove in three runs. Freshman Kayden Henry hit a home run to finish 2 for 4.

Citlaly Gutierrez picked up her third win of the season, allowing one hit with a strikeout in four innings.

Against the Demons, Katie Stewart and Atwood hit home runs. Stewart jumpstarted the offense with a 2-run homer in the first inning and Atwood crushed a 3-run blast as part of a 5-run fourth inning for the Longhorns.

Texas starting pitcher Mac Morgan scattered five hits and allowed two runs in four innings. Sophia Simpson finished the game in the circle, pitching the fifth.

Texas (15-1) plays Hofstra at 3 p.m. Saturday. Hofstra played twice Friday in the tournament and lost 1-0 to Northwestern State and 6-4 to Tarleton State.
