No. 6 Texas runs away from Kansas in Big 12 women’s quarterfinals 76-60

  

AUSTIN (KXAN) — No. 6 Texas held off Kansas for a 76-60 win in the Big 12 Conference women’s basketball tournament quarterfinals Saturday at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

Aaliyah Moore notched a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds while Big 12 co-player of the year Madison Booker poured in a game-high 21 points with seven assists for the Longhorns. They’ll meet either Kansas State or West Virginia in the semifinals on Monday.

Texas didn’t let dynamic Kansas guard Wyvette Mayberry score, forcing her to miss all seven attempts in 31 minutes. The Jayhawks shot 38% from the field, 19 for 50, with only eight field goals in the first half. Conversely, the Longhorns shot nearly 50% from the field, 29 for 60, and forced 14 Kansas turnovers. Texas also ruled the boards with 39 rebounds including 16 offensive rebounds which the Longhorns turned into 24 second-chance points.

Taylor Jones pitched in 15 points with seven rebounds and Shay Holle had 10 points including both of the Longhorns’ 3-pointers. Texas finished off the Jayhawks by shooting 8 for 12 from the field and 10 for 12 from the foul line in the fourth quarter, outscoring them 28-17. Texas scored on 38 of its 60 possessions and blocked seven shots.

S’Mya Nichols scored 20 points for the Jayhawks and Holly Kersgieter notched 17 points with four 3-pointers. Kansas led for 0:17 of the game early in the first quarter until Moore scored her first points of the game.
