One dead, one injured after crash near I-30 in Arlington, police say

All westbound lanes of I-30 at Fielder Road were shut down due to the investigation. Police said they’ve arrested a man that was racing with the victims beforehand.

ARLINGTON, Texas — One person is dead and another has life-threatening injuries after a crash near Interstate 30 in Arlington on Sunday evening, police said.

Police said they responded to the crash around 5:15 p.m. on westbound I-30 near Fielder Road. Those lanes were shut down through the evening for an investigation.

According to police, it appeared a vehicle had gone off the roadway, down an embankment and landed on its roof into water.

Rescue crews also responded and pulled the 27-year-old driver and the 22-year-old passenger from the vehicle. Police confirmed the driver died at the scene and the passenger was hospitalized in critical condition.

According to Arlington police, witnesses told officers that the driver appeared to have been racing another driver. He was allegedly trying to pass that other driver on the shoulder of the highway when he lost control and went off the road.

The second driver, identified by police as 23-year-old Vincent Ybarra, had pulled over near the crash site. Officers say they talked with Ybarra and eventually arrested him. He was charged with one count of Racing on a Highway Causing Serious Bodily Injury/Death.

“The Arlington Police Department wants to remind the public that street racing is not only incredibly dangerous, it’s a serious crime that will not be tolerated,” officers said in a news release.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the deceased victim once his loved ones have been notified.
