PB&J hot dog? Fort Worth food truck puts unique spin on the classic American food

FORT WORTH, Texas — There are roughly eight billion people in the world, but there’s only one person on earth who thought, “You know what would go great on a hot dog? Peanut butter and jelly.’”

“I was eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich one night and got to thinking, ‘Why not throw it on a hot dog?’” said Juan Acosta.

Acosta has a lot of unusual ideas for hot dogs, but peanut butter and jelly?

That was a bit too far for his wife, Salina.

“I said, ‘You can’t put that on our menu,’” Salina recalled. “’That sounds crazy. No one’s going to buy it.’”

But then she took a bite.

“I was like, ‘you have to put that on the menu,’” she said.

That PB&J hot dog is now part of the secret menu at their food truck, Big Dawgs Hot Dog Company, located outside the Rusty Nickel Ice House in Fort Worth.

The whole idea for a food truck started because of a craving.

Salina is from Los Angeles and every time they visited, Juan came back to Fort Worth looking for a similar hot dog experience.

“I couldn’t find anything like that,” he said.

He started making his own hot dogs and over time, they became much more elaborate and unique.

So they started selling their own hot dogs, or as they call them, glizzys.

“People looked at me pretty crazy like what are you talking about,” he said.

They have typical options like a chili dog or plain, but hots dogs with shrimp alfredo or steak is what really brings people back.

“Ninety-nine point nine percent of people who thought I was crazy are pretty much 99.9 percent of our returning customers,” he said.
