Kirstin Maldonado grew up in Arlington and got her start performing at Theatre Arlington and Martin High School.

ARLINGTON, Texas — If you ask Angelica Maldonado, she’s no different than any other mom in North Texas. When it comes to her daughter, Kirstin Maldonado, Angelica smiled, “She’s brought so much joy to my life. She’s the reason I live. She’s the love of my life.”

Kirsty, as she’s affectionately called by her mom, is the female singer in the acapella group Pentatonix. She grew up loving to sing and perform.

“When she started auditioning for different roles at Theatre Arlington and Martin High School is when I realized that she started getting all those roles and that she was talented.” Angelica Maldonado said

Pentatonix was created by three friends, all from North Texas. Kirsty, Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi. You may remember them as the season three winners of “The Sing Off” competition show. Angelica Maldonado remembers how the superstar group came together.

“The three of them got together, they found Avi through a mutual friend, the bass,” she recalled. “They found Heaven, the beat boxer, through a YouTube video that had gone viral. They all got together the day before the audition. It was just amazing.”

In a flash, her only child was off to Los Angeles to chase her dream with two childhood best friends. When asked, did you always know this was the kind of path she would take, Angelica Maldonado replied, “She always loved it, even as just a tiny child. She always loved singing.”

The Grammy award-winning singer released her first solo EP in 2017, titled L O V E. She’s also a newlywed, marrying Ben Hausdorff in April. “The wedding was beautiful,” Angelica Maldonado gushed. “The weekend was perfect and you realized at that moment that they are perfect for each other.”

Kirsty is now also a mom to almost two-year-old Eliana who Angelica adds, “Is amazing, beautiful, spirited. I just love her. She adds so much to my life.”

WFAA wanted to know, what her message would be for Kirsty as she embarks on the same journey she’s been on as a mom. Angelica quickly smiled, ”Just always love and support Eliana in whatever she wants to do. Always be there for her and when things get hard just love her through it.”
