Police explain why threat led to massive New Braunfels High School lockdown

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – The New Braunfels High School lockdown on Thursday prompted a massive response from law enforcement and first responders after the school received a potential threat.

Although the threat was found not credible, New Braunfels Assistant Police Chief said the response is all part of a safety plan.

“Because of the nature of the information we received, we ended up having support from our department, the fire department, from a variety of surrounding law enforcement agencies,” Assistant Chief of Police Joe Vargas said.

The lockdown spanned several hours, but no injuries were reported and all students and staff were safe.

Vargas said with a new school year in full swing, parents should know that his department is always prepared for similar incidents.

“We provide that presence and that security at the school and we will continue to do that,” Vargas said.

Police are expected to release more specific detailed information on the investigation next week.
