COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – With college students back in town, roadways and sidewalks around campus have become increasingly busy.
While this happens every year as more than 70,000 people move back to the area, law enforcement officials say it’s important to help keep each other safe. Texas A&M University police are asking everyone to be alert.
“We’re excited to have the students back. We love our students and our main mission here is to make sure everybody is safe,” Officer Robert Leseth said. Offering advice for drivers in the area he continued, “Don’t look at your phone. I think that’s really important, especially when you’re driving but also when you’re crossing the street. It’s really important to make sure that you’re using sidewalks. Make sure you’re making [eye] contact with other drivers, and make sure that they’re aware [of you] because sometimes other drivers aren’t always aware.”
Once people do get used to the increased traffic, Leseth told KBTX it’s going to change again. With football and sports kicking off at the end of August, even more new people will be here.
“Just be aware, be patient. We have a lot of new people here who don’t know the area too well, so just work with them. They’re not being malicious, they just are new,” added Leseth.
Leseth says the best things people can do is be patient with each other and keep the phones down.
