AUSTIN (KXAN) — It’s halfway through the decathlon at the Texas Relays and defending NCAA champion Leo Neugebauer from Texas is flexing again.
Neugebauer posted the third-best first-day score in NCAA history of 4,620 points Wednesday at Mike A. Myers Stadium to take a commanding lead after five events. Denim Rogers, competing unattached, is in second with 3,975 points.

Neugebauer is 29 points ahead of the NCAA record score of 8,836 he set at last year’s NCAA championships and he set an all-time collegiate best mark in the shot put with a heave of 56 feet, 7.5 inches.
He scored 919 points with a 100-meter dash time of 10.74 seconds, followed by a whopping 1,012 points in the long jump with a leap of 22-7.5. His record shot put mark earned him 929 points and he cleared 6-8.75 in the high jump for 850 points. He sped to a win in the 400 with a time of 47.99 for 910 points.
Neugebauer holds the national record for his native Germany and finished fifth in the decathlon at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
