SAN ANTONIO – VIA Metropolitan Transit celebrated the grand opening of its new VIAtrans Operations Center on Thursday.
The project is part of VIA’s plan to “Keep San Antonio Moving” with innovations designed to improve VIA’s public services.
The facility is the first of its kind built by VIA for the transit company in its history.

The 11-acre, 100,000-square-foot property at 4902 Fredericksburg Road is designed to consolidate VIAtrans paratransit operations and free up space at VIA’s original bus yard at San Pedro and North Flores, according to a news release.
San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg joined the VIA Metropolitan Transit team in commemorating the milestone.

“Our city, our community, and what it means to have meaningful public transportation today has completely transformed.”. . . We need public transportation to stay competitive, to grow jobs, to attract talent, and to capture the momentum of this unprecedented growth. None of it works without affordable, reliable public transportation,” Nirenberg said .
More than 130 paratransit vehicles, operations, operators, and maintenance staff have moved to the new VTOC.
VIA’s Scheduling and Dispatching staff will be relocated to the new facility by December.
“These facilities will be the backbone of a growing system that is designed with more frequent, reliable bus and van service, expanded VIAlink service zones, and an Advanced Rapid System network of corridors that’s already underway,” said VIA President and CEO Jeffrey C. Arndt.
