Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas, or VLS, has received a $20,000 grant from the Texas Bar Foundation, one of the nation’s largest charitably funded bar foundations, to continue its work of providing pro bono legal services to low-income survivors of domestic violence.
With this grant, VLS will assist those affected by domestic violence, aiming to empower them to end violent relationships, begin the process of divorce, and establish custody and child-support orders to protect their children.
VLS seeks to close the justice gap in which low-income and historically oppressed communities are met with barrier after barrier in an already complicated civil justice system. To achieve equitable access to justice for Central Texas residents, VLS provides legal advice and community outreach clinics in North, Central, and South Austin. For those outside of Travis County, VLS offers a legal advice phone clinic, which address geographic and transportation barriers that underserved community members often face.
Through these clinics, residents can seek advice on civil legal matters such as divorce, child custody and support, wills, eviction, foreclosure, bankruptcy, and more. In addition to legal advice, direct case representation is also available.
