Police said they responded to a call about a stolen vehicle from Georgia possibly being found, then engaged in a chase that ended with a crash followed by gunshots.
WEATHERFORD, Texas — A person suspected of driving a stolen vehicle was shot and killed by Weatherford police after firing at officers on Christmas Eve, officials said.
According to a statement from the Weatherford Police Department, officers were dispatched to York Avenue at 8:08 a.m. on Dec. 24 to a call about a reported stolen vehicle out of Georgia.
Police said that officers located the vehicle while responding to the scene, then engaged in a pursuit of the vehicle.
During that chase, police said, the suspected stolen vehicle was involved in an accident near the intersection of Ric Williamson Memorial Highway and US-180.
Per the police statement, the driver exited the vehicle once it came to a rest following the accident. The driver then opened fire on officers and troopers who’d been in pursuit, police said.
According to the Weatherford Police Department, its officers then returned fire, striking the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
No officers were injured in the incident, police said.
Police said the officer-involved shooting will now be investigated by the Texas Rangers, and that additional details will not be released until a later date.
Following the incident, a heavy police presence remains in the area and traffic delays are expected. Police ask that the public avoids the area until it is cleared.
