Governor Greg Abbott, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), and the Texas National Guard continue to work together to secure the border; stop the smuggling of drugs, weapons, and people into Texas; and prevent, detect, and interdict transnational criminal activity between ports of entry.
Since the launch of Operation Lone Star, the multi-agency effort has led to over 489,500 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 37,500 criminal arrests, with more than 34,100 felony charges reported. In the fight against the fentanyl crisis, Texas law enforcement has seized over 450 million lethal doses of fentanyl during this border mission.
Texas has also bused:
Over 12,500 migrants to Washington, D.C. since April 2022
Over 29,300 migrants to New York City since August 2022
Over 23,800 migrants to Chicago since August 2022
Over 3,300 migrants to Philadelphia since November 2022
Over 10,300 migrants to Denver since May 18
Over 1,200 migrants to Los Angeles since June 14
Operation Lone Star continues to fill the dangerous gaps created by the Biden Administration’s refusal to secure the border. Every individual who is apprehended or arrested and every ounce of drugs seized would have otherwise made their way into communities across Texas and the nation due to President Joe Biden’s open border policies.
RECENT HIGHLIGHTS FROM OPERATION LONE STAR:
WATCH: Governor Abbott: Biden Reversed Border Policies That Kept America Safe
Governor Abbott joined America’s Newsroom on Monday to discuss President Trump’s border security policies that kept America safe, while President Biden continues to fail to secure the border. The Governor also called on members of Congress to hold fast in negotiations with President Biden to end the mass influx of illegal immigration along the southern border.
“Just four years ago, we had the lowest number of illegal border crossings in 40 years—and that’s because President Trump put in place four policies: the Remain in Mexico policy, the Title 42 policy, the end of catch and release, and building a border wall,” said Governor Abbott. “When [President] Biden came in, he eliminated all of those four policies. [Members of] Congress are negotiating with the Biden Administration on policies that would provide extraordinary relief—if not eliminate—all of the illegal border crossings.”
Texas Border Czar’s Border Patrol Experience Crucial To Operation Lone Star
Governor Abbott touted the expertise of Texas Border Czar Mike Banks as a critical component in Texas’ efforts to secure the border. Governor Abbott hired Border Czar Banks in January 2023 to lead Texas’ historic border mission, Operation Lone Star.
“Mike’s expertise as a veteran Border Patrol agent is critical for Texas to hold the line,” said Governor Abbott.
WATCH: Lt. Olivarez: Biden’s Border Crisis Shows No Signs Of Slowing Down
DPS Lt. Chris Olivarez joined Fox Business this week where he discussed the rampant increase in illegal border crossings from Mexico into Texas under the Biden Administration.
“All those images you are seeing right now, there is no sign of the situation slowing down,” said Lt. Olivarez. “Typically, around this time in December, numbers have always been low in apprehensions because of the weather. This is not the case with this current situation—that’s why I say that this is way beyond a border crisis. This is deliberate inaction.”
WATCH: DPS Elite Brush Team Tracks Down Migrants During Ride Along
DPS’ Elite Brush Team near Eagle Pass took NewsNation’s Ali Bradley on a ride along this week to highlight Texas’ response to the border crisis to stop illegal immigration and criminal activity along the border. During the ride along, the Brush Team apprehended eight illegal immigrants for criminal trespass on private property.
DPS Seizes Over 14 Lbs Of Heroin In Webb County Traffic Stop
DPS seized more than 14 pounds of heroin during a traffic stop in Webb County on Wednesday. DPS’ Criminal Investigations Division (CID), with the assistance from the Texas Highway Patrol (THP), stopped a vehicle on I-35 for a traffic violation. During a vehicle search, the THP trooper discovered a total of six plastic-wrapped bundles containing heroin concealed inside the vehicle.
The driver and passenger, both residents of El Paso, were placed under arrest and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. DPS’ CID is further investigating this case.
WATCH: DPS Troopers Stop Human Smuggling Attempt In Kinney County
During a traffic stop in Kinney County, DPS troopers discovered four illegal immigrants inside a Toyota Camry. The driver, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador residing in Houston, was arrested for the smuggling of persons. The four illegal immigrants were referred to Border Patrol.
WATCH: Tyler Man Arrested, Charged For Second Human Smuggling Offense
A human smuggler led DPS and Florida Highway Patrol troopers on a high-speed vehicle pursuit in Kinney County. The smuggler, from Tyler, eventually stopped and let four illegal immigrants bail out and run towards the brush. Troopers then discovered seven more illegal immigrants inside the vehicle.
The driver confessed to being arrested for smuggling just the month prior. He was arrested again and charged with evading arrest and smuggling of persons. The seven illegal immigrants were referred to Border Patrol.
WATCH: Texas Military Department Surpasses 80,000 Illegal Immigrant Turn Backs
Through continuous deployment and border security efforts, the Texas Military Department has turned back more than 80,000 illegal immigrants to Mexico since the beginning of Operation Lone Star. Soldiers work in staggered shifts, deterring and repelling individuals and groups from crossing into Texas illegally.

Governor Greg Abbott today announced that he requested a disaster declaration from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for Northwest Texas communities affected by severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall that began on May 27. Governor Greg Abbott today announced that he requested a disaster declaration from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for Northwest Texas communities affected by severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall that began on May 27. If approved, this SBA declaration would make federal assistance available in the form of disaster loans for Potter County and its contiguous counties.
“With severe flooding damaging homes and businesses in Northwest Texas last month, we must utilize every resource available to help Texans recover,” said Governor Abbott. “If approved, this SBA disaster declaration will give Texans access to critical loans they need to continue to rebuild and move forward. I thank the Texas Division of Emergency Management for working with local partners to ensure that Potter County and surrounding communities meet the eligibility requirements for additional financial assistance.”
If the state’s request is approved, the SBA would provide low-interest loans through its disaster programs to qualifying Texans whose homes and businesses sustained damage during the flooding and severe weather.
Local, state, and federal officials conducted an analysis of damage sustained in impacted communities, which verifies that Potter County meets the federally-required thresholds for SBA assistance. Officials also reviewed disaster damage information self-reported by Texans through Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool (iSTAT) surveys.
Following the severe storms and flooding that affected homes, businesses, and the agriculture industry throughout the Panhandle region, Governor Abbott directed TDEM to activate state emergency response resources and increase the readiness level of the Texas State Operations Center to support requests for assistance from local officials. On June 6, the Governor issued a disaster declaration for the Texas Panhandle, High Plains, and South Plains regions impacted by flooding and severe weather.

Governor Greg Abbott today touted the many achievements from the 88th regular legislative session and highlighted his plan to complete unfinished business in subsequent special sessions during a fireside chat at the Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF) in Austin.Governor Greg Abbott today touted the many achievements from the 88th regular legislative session and highlighted his plan to complete unfinished business in subsequent special sessions during a fireside chat at the Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF) in Austin.
“In Texas, we don’t do things half-heartedly,” said Governor Abbott. “We go big, and we make sure we accomplish our big vision–that includes delivering the largest property tax cut in the history of our state and expanding education freedom for all Texans. Texans want to own their property, not rent it from the government. Under my property tax plan, we will put Texans on the pathway to eliminate property taxes. Texas must also empower every parent in our state to choose the best education pathway for their child, and we will do that under my plan to expand access to Education Savings Accounts. I look forward to working with my partners in the legislature during these special sessions to pass legislation that builds on the momentum of freedom and prosperity embedded in the promise of Texas.”
During a discussion moderated by TPPF CEO Greg Sindelar, the Governor touted several major achievements accomplished during the regular 88th Legislative Session, including providing more than $5.1 billion to secure the border, but emphasized that many critical items–like cutting property taxes and expanding school choice–still need to be passed. Governor Abbott noted that his property tax plan would direct $17.6 billion of Texas’ historic budget surplus already appropriated by the legislature to cut property tax rates, putting money back into the pockets of hardworking Texans. Pointing to the quality of education in states with robust school choice programs, the Governor also emphasized the importance of passing his plan to expand state-funded Education Savings Accounts to every Texas student.
In his 2023 State of the State address, Governor Abbott announced cutting property taxes and education freedom for Texans as emergency items for the 88th Legislature.
On Monday night, Governor Abbott called an immediate special session and identified cutting property taxes and cracking down on human smuggling as agenda items for special session #1. Earlier this week, over 30 leading statewide business associations shared their overwhelming support of Governor Abbott’s property tax cut plan.

Since the launch of Operation Lone Star, the multi-agency effort has led to over 376,000 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 28,000 criminal arrests, with more than 25,000 felony charges reported. In the fight against fentanyl, Texas law enforcement has seized over 416 million lethal doses of fentanyl during this border mission.
Texas has also bused more than 9,400 migrants to our nation’s capital since April 2022, over 6,700 migrants to New York City since August 5, more than 1,900 migrants to Chicago since August 31, more than 1,000 migrants to Philadelphia since November 15, and 40 migrants to Denver on the first bus that departed this week (story, below).
Operation Lone Star continues to fill the dangerous gaps left by the Biden Administration’s refusal to secure the border. RECENT HIGHLIGHTS FROM OPERATION LONE STAR:
Governor Abbott Applauds Texas National Guard, DPS For Border Efforts
Governor Greg Abbott today thanked Texas National Guard soldiers and DPS troopers for their selfless service at the southern border and provided an update on Texas’ response to the ongoing border crisis during a press conference in Brownsville. During the Governor’s visit to the Texas-Mexico border, he applauded the hardworking men and women of Operation Lone Star, serving as part of Texas’ unprecedented response to fill in the gaps created by President Biden’s reckless open border policies.
“I’m here in Brownsville today to thank the hardworking men women who are defending our border for their bravery and courage,” said Governor Abbott. “These men and women in uniform here today, they’re considered to be heroes by their fellow Americans. They should be proud of what they’ve done. I’m proud of what they’ve done.”

Governor Abbott Urges Nation’s Governors To Help Combat Border Crisis
Governor Greg Abbott on Tuesday urged the nation’s Governors to help support Texas’ unprecedented border security efforts in the wake of President Joe Biden ending Title 42 last week and his continued refusal to enforce federal immigration laws. In letters sent to each of his fellow Governors, Governor Abbott requested support in responding to the ongoing border crisis through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, which enables states to provide assistance and share resources with another state in response to a disaster or emergency.
“The flood of illegal border activity invited by the Biden Administration flows directly across the southern border into Texas communities, but this crisis does not stop in our state,” reads the letter. “Join us in the mission to defend our national sovereignty and territorial integrity and send all available law enforcement personnel and resources to the Texas-Mexico border to serve alongside our thousands of Texas National Guard soldiers and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers.”

WATCH: Governor Abbott Highlights Texas’ Leadership Amid President Biden’s Border Crisis
Governor Abbott spoke with The Dana Show this week about the Biden Administration’s continued denial of the magnitude of the border crisis created by the President’s reckless open border policies. Following the Governor’s request of his fellow Governors to support Texas’ historic response, he emphasized how Operation Lone Star and the new Texas Tactical Border Force are successfully repelling illegal immigrants, with an increased presence at hotspots along the border, as well as miles of additional razor wire barriers.
“We have Texas National Guard soldiers and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers on the Texas side of that razor wire, making sure no one gets through,” said Governor Abbott. “The National Guard, as well as law enforcement in other states, have seen what Texas is doing to block and prevent people from crossing our border illegally. We’re getting requests–from Idaho and Florida already–from other states to lend their National Guard or their law enforcement officers, who believe our border should be secured and our sovereignty should be protected.”
Governor Abbott Announces First Bus Of Migrants Arrives In Denver
Governor Greg Abbott yesterday announced the arrival of the first group of migrants bused to Denver, Colorado from Texas. The migrants were dropped off near Civic Center Park at 14th Street and Court Place on Thursday afternoon.
“Texas’ overwhelmed and overrun border communities should not have to shoulder the flood of illegal immigration due to President Biden’s reckless open border policies, like his mass catch and release without court dates or any way to track them,” said Governor Abbott. “Until the President and his Administration step up and fulfill their constitutional duty to secure the border, the State of Texas will continue busing migrants to self-declared sanctuary cities like Denver to provide much-needed relief to our small border towns.”

WATCH: Governor Abbott Emphasizes Continued Need For Operation Lone Star
On Thursday, Governor Abbott joined Fox News to provide an update on Texas’ unprecedented border crisis response following President Biden ending Title 42 last week. Operation Lone Star is successfully repelling migrants attempting to cross the Texas-Mexico border illegally, as Mexican drug cartels attempt to recalibrate their criminal smuggling operations to continue profiting off the chaos created by President Biden’s open border policies.
“[Cartels] are holding tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of people back, trying to figure out where and how to cross the border,” said Governor Abbott. “There’s only one governmental entity in the entire United States of America that is repelling people who are trying to enter illegally, and that’s the State of Texas.”
WATCH: DPS Lt. Olivarez Details Texas’ Effective Deterrence As Title 42 Ended
DPS Lt. Chris Olivarez this week discussed with Fox News how Texas’ heightened border security efforts in preparation for the end of Title 42 helped stop thousands of illegal border crossings. He points to the miles of additional razor wire, the border wall, increased manpower, and a unified show of force as being effective deterrents from the State of Texas in spite of the federal government’s inaction.
“Governor Abbott took a proactive approach and deployed additional state resources and the Texas National Guard and DPS troopers to place razor wire along the Rio Grande in Brownsville,” said Lt. Olivarez. “We took a more aggressive response in trying to block these crossings, and we prevented thousands who could have potentially made it across the border illegally. The federal government should take a page out of Governor Abbott’s border security playbook and use that to secure the border, because we saw how effective it was.”
WATCH: DPS Regional Director Discusses President Biden’s Handling Of Crisis
This week, DPS West Texas Regional Director Jose Sanchez discussed with Fox Business the lack of support by the federal government in addressing the ongoing border crisis. Because the Biden Administration has enabled record-levels of illegal immigration over the past two years, Texas has had to go to historic lengths and utilize all available state resources to respond to this ongoing crisis, especially leading up to President Biden ending Title 42 last Thursday.
“We didn’t know what to expect [with the end of Title 42], but thanks to Governor Abbott and DPS Director Steve McCraw for giving us the support we needed down here to help secure the border, today we actually woke up to a calm day,” said Director Sanchez. “We closed the holes with the amount of personnel we have along the border. We have proven throughout these past two years that when you have concertina wire, barriers, and a show of force on the border, it proves to be a deterrence.”
WATCH: Texas National Guard Utilizes All Strategies To Deter Illegal Crossings
Texas National Guard soldiers are using all available strategies to deter illegal immigrants from crossing the border into Texas. Soldiers helped install miles of additional razor wire along the border and continue to maintain a strong presence behind the barriers. Texas National Guard drone teams also play a critical role in detecting illegal immigrants attempting to hide.
“The drone teams make us extremely proficient,” said Staff Sgt. Samuel Garza. “The capabilities drone teams bring to the mission is that we can get eyes on from about a mile and a half out from us. We can coordinate our ground teams and work them in to have less resistance from [illegal immigrants] being captured.”
Texas National Guard Foot Patrols Help Deter Illegal Border Crossings In Laredo
Texas National Guard soldiers helped deter a group of illegal immigrants from entering Texas near Laredo this week. Soldiers responded to sensors alerting law enforcement partners of the group attempting to climb the riverbank into the thick brush along the Rio Grande River. Once the group of illegal immigrants saw the soldiers, they turned around and swam back to the Mexico side.

A human smuggler led DPS troopers on a high-speed vehicle pursuit in Kinney County earlier this week. The smuggler was eventually stopped and arrested. Governor Greg Abbott today announced a disaster declaration for residents in Hidalgo County impacted by the severe storms that caused property damage on April 28.Governor Greg Abbott today announced a disaster declaration for residents in Hidalgo County impacted by the severe storms that caused property damage on April 28.
“The State of Texas is ready to provide all available resources and support for Texans in Hidalgo County as they rebuild and recover from severe storm damage last month,” said Governor Abbott. “This disaster declaration will help those impacted to move forward, recover from property damage, and continue to rebuild from severe storm damage. I urge all Texans affected by this storm to report damages to the iSTAT damage survey so state and local officials can continue to assess reported damage to determine whether the state qualifies for federal assistance.”
Additionally, the Governor directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to request joint disaster damage assessments with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to determine the state’s eligibility for federal disaster assistance for Texans whose properties were damaged during the April 28 storm. Following an initial review of damage assessment information self-reported by Texans through the Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool (iSTAT), state and local officials believe the damage is sufficient to meet requirements for a declaration by the SBA. If the damage sustained qualifies for an SBA administrative disaster declaration, the SBA can provide low-interest loans through its disaster programs to eligible Texans whose homes and businesses were damaged during the severe weather.
Texans are encouraged to self-report property damage using iSTAT at damage.tdem.texas.gov. The survey can be filled out in English and Spanish.

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS FROM OPERATION LONE STAR:
Governor Abbott Deploys New Texas Tactical Border Force
Governor Abbott on Monday announced the deployment of the new Texas Tactical Border Force to the Texas-Mexico border to respond to the growing border crisis. With President Biden ending Title 42 yesterday, the Governor is enhancing Texas’ unprecedented border security efforts with the tactical deployment of hundreds of Texas National Guard soldiers to join the thousands already deployed as part of Operation Lone Star and serve on the new border force for targeted responses as the nation braces for a spike in illegal immigration.
“With the ending of Title 42 on Thursday, President Biden is laying down the welcome mat to people across the entire world, but Texas is deploying our new Texas Tactical Border Force,” said Governor Abbott. “The Texas National Guard is loading Blackhawk helicopters and C-130s and deploying specially trained soldiers for the Texas Tactical Border Force, who will be deployed to hotspots all along the border to help intercept and repel large groups of migrants trying to enter Texas illegally.”

WATCH: Governor Abbott, Border Czar Banks Discuss New Texas Border Force
On Thursday, Governor Abbott and Texas Border Czar Mike Banks spoke with Fox News in their first joint interview about the unprecedented surge of illegal immigrants President Biden is inviting into our country as Title 42 ends this week. The ending of Title 42 marks the latest effort by the Biden Administration to dismantle every effective border security measure enacted by the previous administration, which had reduced illegal border crossings to the lowest levels in decades before skyrocketing under President Biden.
“If President Biden had not eliminated all of those policies, we would not be having the catastrophe we have today,” said Governor Abbott. “The border has been open under the Biden Administration, which is enticing people to come here illegally.”
“Until there are consequences for someone trying to enter this country illegally, [migrants] are going to continue to come,” said Border Czar Banks, highlighting the situation he has observed as part of his border security duties. “This is absolutely devastating the state and communities in Texas. We cannot continue to sit back and allow the federal government to let thousands and thousands of people into Texas and the rest of the United States.”
WATCH: Governor Abbott Details Chaos Caused By President Biden’s Policies
Governor Abbott spoke with Fox News Sunday this week about the Biden Administration’s complete refusal to enforce federal immigration laws that has created a national security crisis along America’s southern border. Noting the stark change of direction President Biden took on the nation’s border security, Governor Abbott discussed how the previously effective policies–including Remain in Mexico, Title 42, ending catch-and-release, and building a border wall–had sent a message to the entire world that the border was closed.
“Only when President Biden came into office and eliminated all those policies and laid down a welcome mat to the entire world that we suddenly have this chaos,” said Governor Abbott. “President Biden is sending 1,500 soldiers to the border to do paperwork. That is not going to secure the border. We need not 1,500 soldiers; we need 15,000 or 150,000 to secure the border because of the open border policies of the Biden Administration. This is a day late and tens of thousands of soldier too few.”
WATCH: Governor Abbott Highlights Robust Deterrence Efforts Along Border
On Wednesday, Governor Abbott joined Fox News’ Jesse Watters to discuss the effective deterrence measures Operation Lone Star and the new Texas Tactical Border Force are employing to stem the influx of illegal immigrants entering Texas. Barriers such as razor wire have been installed at locations along the border identified as hotspots for illegal crossings.
“Last December, there was a long line of migrants outside of El Paso trying to get in,” said Governor Abbott. “We set up a massive razor wire wall that’s now 18 miles long. Overnight, the migrants stopped flowing at that location into El Paso. We’ve seen this work, and we’re going to repeat it as often as possible up and down the border.”
Texas New Tactical Border Force Immediately Begins Repelling Illegal Crossings
Ahead of Title 42 ending yesterday, Governor Abbott deployed the state’s new Texas Tactical Border Force to fill in the dangerous gaps created by President Biden’s ongoing open border policies. The Texas Tactical Border Force immediately began efforts to intercept and repel illegal crossings at hotspots along the Texas-Mexico border.
Governor Abbott’s Busing Mission Sends Over 17,000 Migrants To Sanctuary Cities
To provide much-needed relief to overrun Texas border communities, Governor Abbott has bused more than 17,000 migrants to sanctuary cities Chicago, Philadelphia, New York City, and Washington, D.C.
WATCH: DPS Lt. Olivarez Illustrates Texas’ Enhanced Border Security Efforts
DPS Lt. Chris Olivarez and National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd joined Fox News this week to provide an update on Texas’ enhanced border security efforts as Title 42 ends. Despite President Biden’s ongoing attempts to undermine America’s immigration laws by abolishing every effective border security policy, Texas is working harder than ever to proactively protect Texans against the surge of illegal border crossings.
“We will continue to take action and address any threats that we see along the border,” said Lt. Olivarez. “We have to also focus on the criminal activity that will be taking place because of Title 42 ending. There will be an increase in human smuggling, drug smuggling, and gotaways because every federal resource is now going to be pulled from the frontlines. Now, we’re going to have to step in to fill that void.”
WATCH: DPS Lt. Olivarez Stresses Role Of Operation Lone Star In Stemming Chaos
DPS Lt. Olivarez highlighted to Fox News the critical role DPS and the Texas National Guard play in containing the chaos created by President Biden’s open border policies. Operation Lone Star partners have been working around the clock to prepare for the end of Title 42, which as the Biden Administration estimates will encourage up to 13,000 migrants to cross the border illegally each day.
“We’re facing pressure [ahead of Title 42’s end], but we’ve been facing pressure for the past two years since this crisis first started,” said Lt. Olivarez. “This is happening because the federal government took away every single policy and tool that was working. We’re always looking for ways to expand operations. With Title 42 about to be lifted [Thursday night], we are here at ground zero.”
WATCH: Texas National Guard Fortifies Border Barriers As Title 42 Ends
Following Governor Abbott’s deployment this week of the new Texas Tactical Border Force, specially trained Texas National Guard soldiers arrived at hotspots along the border to repel and turnback migrants attempting to enter Texas illegally.
“We’re increasing the size of our position by around six miles of 3-2-1 strand concertina wire,” said Major Sean Storrud, commander, Task Force West, El Paso. “These engineers are building over half-a-mile of 3-2-1 concertina wire barrier on a daily basis. Our goal is to cut off access to the United States from the Mexico side of the border. We have seen the effects where we have substantially reduced the number of migrants crossing into El Paso.”
Texas National Guard Deploys Hundreds Of Additional Troops To Border Region
In response to the increasing number of illegal immigrants attempting to cross the border ahead of the Biden Administration’s decision to end Title 42, on Tuesday the Texas National Guard deployed hundreds of additional soldiers and airmen to hotspots along the Texas-Mexico border. Governor Abbott this week ordered the deployment of additional soldiers to El Paso, who arrived via four C-130s.
Texas National Guard engineers in El Paso have been constructing miles of razor wire barriers to stem the influx of illegal immigrants into Texas communities.
WATCH: DPS Lt. Olivarez Says President Biden Is Enabling Mass Migration Crisis
DPS Lt. Olivarez joined Fox Business on Wednesday to discuss Governor Abbott’s deployment of the new Texas Tactical Border Force to curb mass migration before Title 42 ends. While the Biden Administration is sending 1,500 troops to the southern border for civilian and administrative work, the Governor this week deployed a specialized tactical unit of trained Texas National Guard soldiers to repel mass migration and respond to this Biden-made crisis.
“The federal government is allowing the influx of mass migration these past two years,” said Lt. Olivarez. “They’ve had two years to put a plan into place, but they have not done so. They want to create amnesty for the large groups of illegal immigrants, which is not going to stem the flow across the border.”
WATCH: DPS Lt. Olivarez Points To Critical Level Of Migrants Amassing At Border
Earlier this week, DPS Lt. Olivarez provided an update to Fox News about the critical situation developing along the border as Title 42 ends, with large groups of migrants waiting to pour across the border into America. The new Texas Tactical Border Force began working with Operation Lone Star partners and law enforcement officials this week to prevent a surge in criminal activity that is also anticipated following the policy’s ending.
“Over the past two years, the number [of illegal border crossings] have fluctuated between 7,000-8,000 a day, but just in the past few days, we’ve hit well over 10,000 encounters in a single day,” said Lt. Olivarez. “It’s not just large groups of people coming across. We cannot lose focus on what’s happening behind the scenes as well. People are trying to avoid capture, and drugs are coming across. The Mexican drug cartels are looking forward to the end of Title 42.”
Texas National Guard Helps DPS Apprehend Illegal Immigrants On Private Land
Texas National Guard soldiers assisted DPS in the tracking and apprehension of illegal immigrants trespassing on private property. The illegal immigrants set off motion sensor cameras, which alerted DPS troopers and Texas National Guard soldiers.
The Operation Lone Star partners coordinate on border security missions, which includes troopers deploying drone teams to effectively locate illegal immigrants and sharing those coordinates with troopers and soldiers to catch and apprehend migrants crossing illegally.
WATCH: DPS Seizes 38 Pounds of Methamphetamine In One Traffic Stop
DPS seized 38 lbs. of methamphetamine after a traffic stop on US-90 in Uvalde County last week. A trooper stopped an SUV, and several illegal immigrants bailed out and ran toward the brush. Two were apprehended with the assistance of Border Patrol, and authorities found their backpacks were filled with methamphetamine. The driver from Houston was arrested and faces criminal charges for human smuggling and engaging in organized crime.
DPS Trooper Disrupts Human Smuggling Attempt With Five Illegal Immigrants
A DPS trooper disrupted a human smuggling attempt in Val Verde County this week. A female driver from Ukraine and male passenger from Houston were arrested and face criminal charges for human smuggling after troopers found five illegal immigrants from Honduras inside the vehicle. The couple was attempting to smuggle them to San Antonio in exchange for $1,500 a person.

Since the launch of Operation Lone Star, the multi-agency effort has led to over 369,000 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 27,000 criminal arrests, with more than 25,000 felony charges reported. In the fight against fentanyl, Texas law enforcement has seized over 383 million lethal doses of fentanyl during this border mission.
Operation Lone Star continues to fill the dangerous gaps left by the Biden Administration’s refusal to secure the border. Every individual who is apprehended or arrested and every ounce of drugs seized would have otherwise made their way into communities across Texas and the nation due to President Joe Biden’s open border policies.
RECENT HIGHLIGHTS FROM OPERATION LONE STAR:
Through Operation Lone Star, DPS Stops Over 8,700 Human Smuggling Attempts
DPS troopers deployed under Operation Lone Star have stopped more than 8,700 human smuggling attempts since Governor Abbott launched the mission two years ago. Without Texas’ historic efforts, hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants, weapons, and deadly drugs like fentanyl would have flowed into our country.
During the traffic stops conducted by DPS, troopers found an additional 39,100 illegal immigrants who smugglers had attempted to transport from stash houses and border regions to large cities throughout Texas. Of those illegal immigrants, about 900 were unaccompanied minors.
DPS Seizes Over Half A Million Lethal Doses Of Fentanyl, Weapons In Austin
Governor Abbott yesterday announced DPS Special Agents seized over 507,000 lethal doses of fentanyl along with other narcotics, guns, ammunition, and several stolen vehicles Thursday morning in Austin. Using a number of investigative tools and tactics to further the investigation, DPS’ SWAT executed a search warrant and seized enough lethal doses of fentanyl to kill more than half of Austin’s current population, along with methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin.
“Today marks one month since I directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to provide assistance to the Austin Police Department to help reduce crime and improve safety in the city, and I am proud to see the hard work of these brave men and women saving innocent lives from being taken due to President Biden’s border crisis,” said Governor Abbott. “The Biden Administration’s reckless open border policies pose an imminent danger to communities across Texas and the nation, allowing record levels of deadly drugs and dangerous weapons to pour across our southern border.”
Two people were taken into custody and will face federal charges. The defendants indicated the drugs had come from Mexico and the weapons were heading to Mexico later this week. The investigation remains ongoing at this time.
WATCH: DPS Lt. Olivarez Says Border Crisis Will Get ‘Much Worse’ Without Title 42
DPS Lt. Chris Olivarez joined Fox News this week to point out how the Biden Administration’s complete lack of border enforcement has already led to historic levels of illegal immigration, but with the looming expiration of Title 42 on May 11, the border crisis will significantly worsen.
“This is the responsibility of the federal government, yet we in Texas have been put in a predicament where we have to do something about it because the federal government has failed to secure the border and protect the American people,” said Lt. Olivarez. “Unfortunately, it’s going to get much worse once Title 42 is lifted. And yet, there still is no federal plan or policy in place.”
Texas National Guard Special Response Teams Secure El Paso Border
Texas National Guard Special Response Teams (SRT) are gearing up for the end of Title 42 next month, with engineers installing additional razor wire, constructing barriers, and deploying other strategies to stop illegal crossings in the El Paso region. One soldier with SRT 4 said his team has been installing roughly 720 feet of razor wire each day and setting up 50 rolls of razor wire around Gate 36, which has been rushed by illegal immigrants in the past.
“By limiting access and controlling the flow of people through Gate 36, we hope to prevent [groups rushing the gate],” said Pfc. Carver Dyck. “I’m extremely proud to be part of SRT 4. We’re making a massive difference.”
WATCH: Human Smugglers, Illegal Immigrant Taken To Hospital After Car Crash
DPS aircraft personnel this week observed four people running from a stopped vehicle along a road in Webb County. After the driver took off to evade arrest, he crashed the vehicle into a cement barrier. The driver and passenger, both 18-year-olds from Laredo, were arrested and charged with smuggling of persons.
Along with another illegal immigrant still inside the car, the driver and passenger were transported to the hospital for injuries. The four illegal immigrants who ran from the vehicle were apprehended and referred to Border Patrol.
WATCH: Human Smuggler Leads DPS Troopers On High-Speed Pursuit
A human smuggler led DPS troopers on a high-speed vehicle pursuit in Hidalgo County earlier this week. Because of the driver’s dangerously high speed, he lost control on a dirt road and rolled the vehicle, and several illegal immigrants took off running.
Troopers arrested the driver from Mission, as well as five illegal immigrants from Mexico. Those five were referred to Border Patrol. Seven more evaded by running into a neighborhood. The driver faces charges for evading arrest and smuggling of persons.
DPS Brush Team Locates, Arrests 14 Illegal Immigrants Dressed In Camouflage
A DPS brush team located and arrested 14 illegal immigrants from Mexico who were all dressed in camouflage and trying to avoid detection on a private ranch in Kinney County. All the illegal immigrants now face criminal trespass charges.
Texas National Guard Soldiers Assist With Bridge Surge Simulation In Eagle Pass
Texas National Guard soldiers assisted DPS and Border Patrol with a bridge surge exercise last week in Eagle Pass to practice how each agency would react to an emergency announcement of illegal immigrants storming the bridge into the United States. With Title 42 set to expire next month, Operation Lone Star partners are ramping up efforts to deter and repel the surge of illegal border crossings that is expected to ensue.
“This is the first time we’ve done a drill like this,” said Pfc. Jackson, assigned to Task Force Eagle. “I know that this is a real scenario with Title 42 possibly ending right around the corner. It’s a bit more advanced than our own CDO [civil disturbance operations] training.”
